About Neon Snake

Neon Snake is the arcade classic, rebuilt for a browser that can finally do it justice: a trail that glows, motion that never drops a frame, and controls that answer instantly on a keyboard or a thumb. Steer the snake into the fruit, grow by one segment each time, and stay off your own tail. On the first three speeds the walls are open the way they were on a Nokia — slide off one edge and you come back on the other — so the only thing that can kill you is yourself. Blistering and Absurd put the walls back. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, and a run lasts about ninety seconds — which is exactly as long as a coffee takes to cool. Speed climbs every five fruit, so the game that felt gentle at the start is genuinely difficult by segment forty, and the difference between a good player and a great one is whether they can plan two turns ahead while the board is filling up. Works offline once the page has loaded — a score set that way still counts as your personal best, it just cannot reach the leaderboard — and it remembers that best on this device whether or not you ever make an account.

Questions

How do you get a high score in Snake?

Hug the edges. Most runs end because the snake gets trapped in the middle of the board with its own body on every side, so keep the body wound around the outside and leave the centre as the escape route. Once the tail is long, turn early rather than late — a turn taken one square before you need it always leaves an exit, and a turn taken one square after it never does. On the wrapping speeds, sliding off an edge is a free escape route; on Blistering and Absurd it is a wall.

Can the snake go through the walls?

On Cruise, Quick and Fast, yes — leave one edge and you reappear on the opposite one, exactly like Snake on an old Nokia. Blistering and Absurd are walled, and hitting one ends the run. It is the main reason those two are harder than their speed alone suggests.

Does the snake get faster?

Yes. Every five fruit the tick interval drops by about six milliseconds, down to a floor of 55ms. That is the whole difficulty curve — the board never changes, only how long you have to decide. The five speeds simply change where you start on that curve: Cruise opens at 150ms a step, Absurd at 62ms.

Can I play Snake offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded once it is kept on your device, so the game opens with no connection at all — on a train, on a plane, anywhere. A score set offline updates your personal best but cannot join the leaderboard: a run has to be opened with the server to count, and offline there is nobody to open it with.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Cruise, Quick and Fast are open to everybody and your best score is kept on your device. An account is only needed for Blistering and Absurd, and to appear on the leaderboard — and if you make one later, everything you have already played comes with you.
